I also read this book a number of years ago and really enjoyed it. I recommend it to all.

I just finished reading this months selection, and the one word that pops in my mind is horrific. Not because the book lacked anything, but because of the heart
wrenching story told by Teeda. I literally found myself uttering words of disbelief at the atrocities which took place in Cambodia. You always know if I'm really enjoying a book, because
[I] articulate my thoughts out loud. I can't believe I didn't learn about this in school, as much as they focus on the holocaust--this is just as horrible and unthinkable of a tragedy. In no way am I condoning what Hitler did, but he protected who he believed to be his people (Aryan's/Nazi's). Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge
tortured their own people, they murdered and exploited innocent Cambodians! The way the Butt family and friends held close to
their beliefs and ideals is inspiring. Through their stories we see the strength of the human spirit and how our beliefs and the choices we make in our lives are more important than all the material things we esteem so much. While this book made me feel sad for what these people endured, and made me think about all the suffering that goes unnoticed in our world, I left feeling extremely grateful for my country and for the wonderful family I am a part of.
~SaraSue Coming from an area of the
USA where there is a large Cambodian population I was curious to
know more about their country. As a result I have read the accounts
of several Cambodian families who suffered through this time. As I
read this book (and the other accounts), I was continually inspired
by the love and respect they had for their families. Their determination to survive also awed me. Likewise, I am continually shocked at man's ability to treat man in such a manner, especially in this day and age. After all, this is not ancient history! One could also ask oneself (as a result of reading this book) such things as "What would I do to survive?", "When should I go along or blend in and when should I stand out and make a stand?"
Similar books are "First They Killed My Father" and "Stay Alive My Son"
