The Mormon Trail Locate booklets that detail the paths that the pioneers traveled on. They are available. Many of the historical sites are still visible, and with a full day and a map, it is a unique experience. Preparation to make the most of your trip would be to read pioneer histories. If you are interested mainly in handcart pioneers, the book HANDCARTS TO ZION, By Hafen and Hafen is a 'must-read'. The summers are hot, and the winters are bitterly cold. So be prepared! Most of the sites are accessible by passenger car, but be sure to ask locals for back-road information. Fort Casper and Fort Laramie for great additions to learning pioneer history. Casper also has a new TRAILS MUSEUM that does a nice job.
